Our Mission: To provide good food, community and a nurturing environment to encourage success for Madison County food producers.
How is it possible that a gathering of folks from around Madison County could become passionate to the point of shouting, “Let’s take back our food?” The answer is that everyone is concerned about our food supply, availability, and security. Out of a gathering a year ago to discuss food issues, a Steering Committee made up of gardeners, ranchers, producers, and retired professionals volunteered to continue the food conversation.
Starting from scratch to identify and establish a countywide foodshed is no small matter. We all know that most of the meat raised in Madison County is shipped out of state to join lesser quality meat to be distributed nationally. What happened to the potato growers in our county? Who raises chickens to supply eggs to county residents? What about locally baked bread, pies, scones, and muffins? Can home gardens supply enough extra produce, in season, to land on the tables of residents and restaurants? The questions are many and the answers, complicated.
Planting a seed in uncertain soil requires a leap of faith. Cultivating a regional foodshed takes passionate desire, energy, and effort. Nurturing a local food campaign is a partnership between eaters and producers. A ‘food campaign’ takes a community of concerned citizens to bring change.
Madison Farm to Fork (F2F), a non-profit organization established out of the “take back our food” conversation, has taken on the task of cultivating a countywide foodshed. F2F seeks to promote sustainable local agriculture through its plans to sponsor a farmer’s market, community outreach activities, and grow produce to augment what is already produced in our county.
